How to Protect Yourself from Phone Theft in Commercial Tricycles (Keke Napep)
Criminals are constantly changing their tactics, and one method increasingly reported involves organized phone theft inside commercial tricycles (Keke Napep).
How the Scam Works
You board a tricycle and notice another passenger already seated.
Shortly after the journey begins, another person stops the tricycle and joins, forcing you to sit in the middle.
Unknown to you, the driver and the other passengers are working together.
The driver deliberately drives over potholes or rough roads to create distractions.
One accomplice engages you in conversation while another quietly removes your phone or valuables from your pocket or bag.
After stealing your belongings, one of the accomplices quickly asks to be dropped off.
A short distance later, the driver claims he is no longer going to your destination and asks you to get down. Once you leave, they change direction to reunite with the accomplice who stole your property.
How to Protect Yourself
✅ Avoid boarding a tricycle that already has suspicious passengers inside, especially if you are asked to sit between two strangers.
✅ Keep your phone, wallet, and other valuables in a front pocket, a zippered bag, or somewhere difficult to access.
✅ Do not use or display expensive phones while inside public transport.
✅ Be cautious if strangers try to distract you with unnecessary conversation, arguments, or unusual friendliness.
✅ Stay alert if the driver deliberately drives recklessly or repeatedly hits potholes without reason.
✅ If you suspect something is wrong, ask the driver to stop in a busy, well-populated area and leave immediately.
✅ If your phone is stolen, report the incident to the nearest police station as soon as possible and use your phone's tracking or remote-lock feature if available.
Remember: Your awareness is your first line of defense. Stay vigilant, protect your valuables, and never allow distractions to lower your guard.
