BE AWARE OF P.O.S DEVICE SWAP FRAUD

🚨 SECURITY AWARENESS: BEWARE OF POS DEVICE SWAP FRAUD

POS operators and business owners should remain alert to a growing form of fraud involving the theft and swapping of POS device.

In this type of scam, two fraudsters may visit a POS operator while pretending to be genuine customers who want to make a withdrawal, transfer, or other transaction.

While one fraudster engages the POS operator in conversation and deliberately creates a distraction, the second fraudster may use sleight of hand to secretly swap the operator's genuine POS device with a different one that may be cloned, modified, or pre-configured for fraudulent activities.

The operator may be left holding a useless or fraudulent device, while the criminals leave with the genuine, active POS device linked to the operator's account.

A stolen POS device can potentially be misused to conduct unauthorized transactions or facilitate other forms of financial fraud, they may also attempt to withdraw funds from the POS operator's account.

πŸ›‘️ HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF AS A POS OPERATOR

1. Stay alert when serving multiple customers. If two or more people are deliberately distracting you, stop the transaction and secure your POS device.

2. Know your POS device. Memorize or record its serial number, terminal ID, and other identifying details. Check them regularly.

3. Never leave your POS terminal unattended, even for a few seconds.

4. Check your POS device after every transaction, Make sure it is still your original device before serving the next customer.

5. Keep your terminal in a secure position, where customers cannot easily reach across the counter and grab or exchange it.

6. Do not rush transactions, Fraudsters often create pressure and confusion to make operators act without checking.

7. Monitor your transaction notifications and account balance, Report any suspicious or unauthorized transaction immediately to your bank or POS provider.

8. If you suspect that your POS device has been swapped or stolen, stop using it immediately. Contact your bank or POS provider and request that the POS device and associated account services be secured.

9. Consider using CCTV where possible, particularly in busy POS locations. Clear video coverage can help deter fraud and provide evidence if an incident occurs.

Stay alert, and  Protect your POS device.
Don't allow distraction to become an opportunity for fraud.
