WHY KNOWLEDGE OF CRIMINOLOGY AND SECURITY IS IMPORTANT IN NIGERIA
WHY KNOWLEDGE OF CRIMINOLOGY AND SECURITY IS IMPORTANT IN NIGERIA
Security is no longer a responsibility that should be left only to the police, military, or other security agencies. Every Nigerian needs a basic understanding of crime, security, prevention, and personal safety.
Nigeria is facing serious security challenges, including kidnapping, armed robbery, fraud, cybercrime, terrorism, communal violence, domestic violence, cultism, human trafficking, and other forms of criminal activity. In such an environment, knowledge of Criminology and Security Studies has become more important than ever.
WHAT DOES CRIMINOLOGY TEACH US?
Criminology helps us understand why crime happens, how criminals operate, what factors encourage criminal behaviour, and how crime can be prevented. It goes beyond simply reacting after a crime has occurred.
A person with knowledge of criminology can learn to recognize patterns, understand risk factors, assess criminal behaviour, and contribute to better crime-prevention strategies.
WHY IS SECURITY KNOWLEDGE IMPORTANT?
Security knowledge teaches individuals and organizations how to:
• Identify potential threats and vulnerabilities
• Assess and manage risks before they become serious problems
• Recognize suspicious behaviour and situations
• Protect people, property, information, and businesses
• Respond appropriately during emergencies
• Improve security awareness within communities
• Support law-enforcement and security agencies through responsible reporting
• Develop preventive measures instead of waiting for crime to occur
NIGERIA NEEDS MORE SECURITY AWARENESS
One of the biggest mistakes a society can make is to think about security only after something has happened.
Prevention requires knowledge.
A community that understands security risks is more likely to recognize warning signs, report suspicious activities, protect vulnerable people, and cooperate with legitimate security authorities.
Businesses also need trained personnel who understand risk assessment, crime prevention, investigations, security management, emergency preparedness, and protection of assets and information.
KNOWLEDGE CAN HELP PREVENT CRIME
Studying Criminology and Security is not simply about becoming a police officer or security guard.
It can prepare people for roles in security management, crime prevention, investigations, intelligence analysis, risk management, corporate security, community safety, corrections, research, policy development, and security consulting.
Nigeria needs professionals who don't just react to insecurity but can study the causes, identify vulnerabilities, assess risks, and develop practical preventive solutions.
SECURITY IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY
Every citizen has a role to play.
Be vigilant.
Protect yourself and others.
Verify information before acting on it.
Do not ignore suspicious activities.
Report genuine threats to the appropriate authorities.
Learn basic security and emergency procedures.
And, most importantly, do not take the law into your own hands.
OUR FUTURE DEPENDS ON PREVENTION
We cannot build a safe Nigeria through fear alone. We need knowledge, awareness, professional security practices, responsible citizenship, effective law enforcement, and cooperation between communities and security institutions.
Criminology helps us understand crime.
Security knowledge helps us prevent and manage threats.
Together, they can help us build safer communities.
Security begins with awareness. Prevention begins with knowledge.
LET US MAKE SECURITY A CULTURE, NOT JUST A REACTION TO CRISIS.
